BYD has officially overtaken Tesla to become the largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer in the world. The Chinese automaker’s rapid growth since 2021 has propelled it to the top, marking a major milestone in the global EV industry.

In 2024, BYD produced 1,777,965 electric vehicles, surpassing Tesla’s 1,774,442 by 4,500 units. While BYD first outperformed Tesla’s quarterly production in Q4 2023, it briefly fell behind in subsequent quarters. However, by Q4 2024, BYD decisively reclaimed the lead, outproducing Tesla by almost 150,000 vehicles. This achievement cements BYD’s position as the world’s number one EV brand.

Despite being relatively unknown outside China just a few years ago, BYD’s international presence has grown significantly. Headquartered in Shenzhen, the company initially gained prominence as an electronics and battery manufacturer before expanding into the EV sector. Its subsidiary, BYD Auto, has been instrumental in the brand’s success, making it one of the world’s biggest electric car producers.

BYD’s success can be attributed to its vertically integrated business model, which enables cost efficiency and supply chain stability. The company also benefits from its cutting-edge battery technology, including the Blade Battery, which offers superior safety and performance. Additionally, BYD’s strong foothold in China, the world’s largest EV market, has provided a robust foundation for expansion.

With increasing global demand for electric vehicles and BYD’s aggressive expansion into Europe, South America, and India, the brand is well-positioned to maintain its dominance. As it continues to innovate and scale production, BYD is shaping the future of electric mobility on a global scale.
